In The Moment

Self Portrait

Tonight I had some of the best moments of my summer. Perhaps only rivaled by a moonlit night on a balcony in Ethiopia.

It happened by accident. Spur of the moment.

I had just finished a photo shoot with a sweet, fun family, and then I took a quick detour by Lake Michigan to try and capture my vision for today’s Instagram photo prompt. (By the way ~ success!)

While I was perched on that cement structure, doing my iPhone thing and taking in the world around me, I realized what an amazingly beautiful evening it had quickly turned into. Since I had to go back to the car for the big camera anyway, I headed up the drive to a favorite wayside, where the real magic happened.

With just, me, my camera, and God’s glory around me, I had the most wonderful 20 minutes.

I plopped myself into the wet sand at water’s edge, and took in the best evening of summer. It was one of those rare, rare times when the clouds are positioned just right that the sunset actually shows beautifully on my side of the lake.

Thunder was rolling in behind me, and the sand was already soaked from earlier rain.

The air was still muggy from the hot, humid day.

Not another soul in sight.

I breathed in the fresh air, and I felt it on my skin. I let the wet sand coat my pants and shoes.

I took pictures until the dusk no longer allowed it, and then I let the incoming rain drops drip onto my skin, before the downpour arrived.

I thanked God for the life He’s given me, the place He’s put me. The gifts He gives that have everything to do with sensory pleasure, and not so much to do with directly furthering His kingdom. Simply because He loves me.

Facebook Five

I know that every blogger uses their Facebook page differently.  I love the diversity in that, and respect each person’s choices and decisions.  For me, I like to use my Facebook page to post a quick photo from my day, a quote I find especially prevalent, an article that I’ve come across that struck me.  Generally (I’m sure there are exceptions!), my Facebook page reflects quick snippets of my life that will not make their way to the blog.

In case you haven’t been following, here are a few highlights from the past couple of weeks:

1. January 23:

Possibly my best throw-together meal to date: gnocchi with a jar of alfredo sauce (NOT a staple food around here, not quite sure when I bought it!) plus a cup of crushed tomatoes and some basil, over a bed of wilted spinach and topped with parm!

2. February 10:

This doesn’t even begin to capture how beautiful it is in real life… The 3/4 full moon glowing over Lake Michigan, right now.

3. February 11:

‎”Be happy; it’s one way of being wise.”

4. February 12:

Just finished listening to The Book Thief, and it was achingly fantastic. Definite must-read!

5. January 16

It may have been too cold to sit outside, but I still enjoyed some time reading by the lake this afternoon!

Clearing My Head

Today is a fantastically mild winter day (35 degrees!!), and the sun is out which is pretty much the best thing that can happen in winter. I knew I needed to do something outside today, because nothing boosts my spirits more than time outside after being cooped up inside.

Another way that I like to de-stress is to go for a drive, so I decided to do that. I went to some of my favorite places and spaces, did some traipsing in the snow in ridiculously inappropriate shoes, and thoroughly soaked in the day. I even sat by the lake on some big rocks for 15 minutes or so, listening to the waves and appreciating God’s gifts.

Notice a theme? The water is one of my very favorite things. After my mini-adventure, I stopped by the library to do my daily Bible reading; I’ve been resting in Proverbs 31 lately, and it’s been great.

The rest of my afternoon includes taking care of this:

and some quality time with this:

My afternoon most definitely does NOT include a nap, and while this may not sound like news trust me, it most certainly is! My every cell is calling out for me to crawl into bed and let some time just pass me by, but today I choose no.

And tonight, one of my very favorite dates with my most favorite guy!
